Take a step towards a nuclear free world!
Today, we launch a new website: For Peace and Human Needs: Nuclear Disarmament Now! Hundreds of organizations from the US and around the globe are taking new steps, together, to renew the commitment to a nuclear free world.
For Peace and Human Needs: Nuclear Disarmament Now! is a website dedicated to rebuilding the grassroots movement for nuclear disarmament and abolition! We need a nuclear disarmament movement to build momentum to cut the military budget for war to fund peace, jobs and justice in our communities.
President Obama shocked the world in Prague last April when he declared "I state clearly and with conviction America's commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons." His call for real steps can only be realized through public debate, education and vocal support. And yes, marching in the streets.
For Peace and Human Needs: Nuclear Disarmament Now! is a source for the most current writings and resources to take the grassroots movement for peace onto the new terrain of getting rid of all weapons of mass destruction.
Go to For Peace and Human Needs: Nuclear Disarmament Now! to get involved in a massive international petition drive Let President Obama know that we want the administration to initiate good faith multilateral negotiations on an international agreement to abolish nuclear weapons, within our lifetimes! Yes, we can!!
We have a terrific opportunity in May for progress toward nuclear abolition at an important United Nations conference, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference. Government representatives and activists from around the world will gather at a variety of events to consider how to move toward a nuclear weapons-free world and strengthen measures to stop the spread of these deadly weapons. Join us in NYC April 30-May 2!
Yours in peace,
International Planning Committee for Nuclear Abolition, Peace, Sustainability and Justice

It's a scrap if Obama would
Submitted by holler_B on Fri, 02/19/2010 - 03:54.It's a scrap if Obama would still continue to set up his plan regarding the imposition of nuclear energy. How come he wants to do such thing. The Obama nuclear agenda apparently consists of more than just dealing with Iran – Obama wants a nuclear power plant or two built. He and the Department of Energy have just agreed to underwrite and guarantee loans in excess of $8 billion (it takes more than a few payday loans to build a power plant) for the construction of two new power plants in Georgia, both capable of generating over 1100 MWe each (so that's about 2,200 MWe total), on a couple thousand acres. By contrast, a wind power plant takes up almost 100,000 acres to produce less than 800 MWe. 1 MWe is about the equivalent amount of energy (irrespective of watt hours) used powering 1000 homes.
It's a Scrap....

I did not get your point. You seemed critical of the $8 billion cost of the 2 nuke plants, yet described the energy per acre comparison between nukes and wind power in a manner that seemed to favor nukes.
Whatever, there is MUCH more to the comparison than energy per acre. As an example (or 2), wind power is renewable, nuke not.
Wind power has a very small carbon footprint in comparison to nuke (mostly construction and transport of the fuel and byproducts, to name a few). Wind produces no toxic byproducts, nuke does and there is no permanent disposal plan in sight.
As Erich Pica said in a recent Huffington Post article "The fiscal implications of President Obama's position ($8 billion in loan guarentees) are alarming. For decades, the industry has depended on taxpayer support. Investing in emerging technologies that can eventually thrive on their own makes sense, but the nuclear industry doesn't fit the bill. After more than 50 years as one of the biggest recipients of federal subsidies, the industry should sink or swim on its own."
Nuclear power-less is a no brainer, supported by those who arn't thinking in the long term.

Submitted by emmie on Tue, 01/26/2010 - 01:04.well,we should do for it because The accelerating spread of nuclear weapons, nuclear know-how and nuclear material has brought us to a nuclear tipping point. We face a very real possibility that the deadliest weapons ever invented could fall into dangerous hands.me and my all friends have made plan for start a organization which protest against it after our mcts exams. The steps we are taking now to address these threats are not adequate to the danger. With nuclear weapons more widely available, deterrence is decreasingly effective and increasingly hazardous.President Obama shocked the world in Prague last April when he declared "I state clearly and with conviction America's commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons." His call for real steps can only be realized through public debate, education and vocal support.
