UFKB Remembers the Tragedy of Chernobyl
Invites Public to Uranium Forum, May 12th

"As our community finally grapples this week with the threat of global warming, it is important to remember that nuclear energy is not a viable alterantive," said Scott Leyland of Rossland, a spokesperson with Uranium Free Kootenay Boundary. "The melt down of the Chernobyl reactor twenty years ago Thursday resulted in elevated background radiation levels world wide threatening life around the globe. We're now faced with an opportunity here in the BC Interior to say no to those who would spread this deadly technology further."

Uranium-Free Kootenay Boundary is hosting a Public Awareness and Action Forum at the Brilliant Center in Castlegar, Saturday, May 12th, starting at 9:30 am. The event is open to the public and admission is by donation.

The event will include a presentation on the Health and Environmental Impacts of uranium exposure, by Dr. Robert Woollard, Professor and head of UBC Department of Family Practice. Dr. Woolard represented the BC Medical Association in the public inquiry on the subject nearly thirty years ago.

Other presentations will outline Uranium 101, the existing regulatory framework, commercial and military uses for the toxic mineral and sustainable energy alterantives.

The morning's presentations will be followed by a potluck lunch and a participatory strategy session in the afternoon.

"We're offering a highly informative, positive community event, featuring talks, visual presentations, entertainment, vegetarian potluck lunch and community involvement," said Nadine Podmoroff of Pass Creek, another spokesperson for the organizing committee. "We can not risk making the Boundary a sacrifice zone like Chernobyl has become. For the sake of the children, we're urging all to participate in this important event."
